Silicone Glossy Character Surface: Dustproof Treatment with UV Modification
In recent times, we have adopted UV surface treatment—specifically UV modification—for one of our product lines. This term may be familiar to some, while new to others, so let’s explore it together. (Chicarubber)
For silicone products, one of the most common surface treatments has long been the application of a “hand feel coating”—also known as matte coating, satin finish oil, or anti-glare oil. This coating not only improves the tactile quality of the silicone surface, making it smooth and pleasant to the touch (hence the name “hand feel oil”), but also provides dust resistance. Due to these benefits, it has been widely used in the silicone manufacturing industry.
However, with increasingly strict environmental regulations, many silicone product factories can no longer perform coating processes unless they obtain specific environmental permits for spraying operations. This has led to the emergence of an alternative method using UV lamps. By exposing the silicone surface to light of a specific wavelength, the UV treatment induces subtle changes, forming a thin, smooth layer akin to a protective film.
This film offers excellent dustproof performance. For instance, if ash is spread over the treated silicone surface, a simple wipe easily removes it. In fact, UV modification provides longer-lasting dust resistance compared to hand feel oil, unless the silicone surface is physically damaged.
That said, UV modification has not yet gained full acceptance among all consumers. Some still prefer the distinct smoothness of hand feel oil—for example, in products like adult silicone accessories, where tactile experience remains a priority. There is a noticeable difference in feel between the two treatments.
Nevertheless, UV modification is essential for certain silicone products, particularly those with glossy surface characters or logos. Hand feel oil, being matte, would obscure such glossy details if applied. Therefore, UV modification becomes the only viable option to achieve effective dustproofing while preserving the visual clarity of glossy characters. (Chicarubber)
In summary, while both methods have their place, UV modification offers a durable, clear, and dust-resistant finish ideal for silicone items where surface shine and detail must remain visible.
