Silicone USB Plug Samples: How We Hit Tight Cosmetic Standards
When a customer asked us to sample a silicone USB plug, we knew cosmetics would make or break the part. Two sample rounds went out—the customer found the length slightly long, sent updated drawings, and we revised the mold. After two more rounds, the production mold order arrived. Here’s what goes into a part like this. (Chicarubber)
Glossy logo, no exceptions. The plug carries a character logo that must read glossy. That’s why our mold undergoes polishing and plating before it ever runs.
Better steel, better surface. We spec P20 steel—harder than our standard mold steel. The payoff shows up on the product: a cleaner surface and a finer parting line.
Watch the pin area. The pin has an undercut, so a parting line runs around that post. On a silicone USB plug—a part that sits on the outside of the device—every parting line is visible. Tighter is better.
No tool marks, no shortcuts. This is an exterior part. Tool marks and parting lines can’t hide. Our job is to control the process so defects don’t show up in the first place.
Plating wears—we plan for it. Even with a plated mold, the glossy logo gradually dulls in production. We pull the mold and re-clean it to restore that brightness. (Chicarubber)
Tight cosmetics on silicone parts come down to mold steel, surface prep, and discipline. That’s how we build samples that turn into production orders.
