We recently completed an initial sample run for a custom silicone USB plug – and this one came with a prestigious name on the drawing: 3M. The design is clever: the plug can be stretched to insert into a port, locks securely in place when needed, and can be stretched again to remove it effortlessly – no tools, no fuss. This requires precise elasticity and dimensional stability, which we achieved through careful material selection and mold design.
Quality control – the numbers don’t lie
Our first samples passed dimensional inspection with flying colors – every critical measurement fell comfortably within tolerance. However, we did notice a tiny flash (burr) inside the hole, a common challenge in micro‑molding. While our team carefully trimmed it with fine knives, we acknowledged that a slight residual edge could remain. For production, we are already optimizing the mold’s parting line and venting to minimize flash at the source, ensuring cleaner parts straight out of the tool.
Surface finish – clear or matte?
The current samples have a matte surface, which is perfectly functional and meets the performance requirements. That said, we understand that some applications demand a crystal‑clear, glossy appearance. We offer both options – if your design calls for high‑gloss transparency, we can adjust the mold polish and process parameters to deliver that as well.
