Custom Silicone Masking Covers for Liquid‑Cooled Housings – Precision Protection During Surface Finishing
We recently partnered with a customer who manufactures aluminum liquid‑cooling enclosures. Their challenge? They needed a way to selectively mask specific areas of their housings during an aggressive bead‑blasting (sandblasting) process. Only the exposed surfaces should be textured – the masked zones had to remain pristine. (Chicarubber)
Our solution: a custom‑designed silicone “claw” cover that fits snugly over the housing. But this wasn’t a simple slip‑on cap. The masking had to stay firmly in place under high‑pressure blasting, without shifting or falling off. We started with the customer’s actual housing samples and CAD drawings, then engineered a silicone boot with an internal metal clip (similar to those used in perfume bottle stands) to provide secure retention. Initial tests were promising – the cover stayed put, and the blasted finish was perfectly uniform, with clean, sharp edges at the mask boundary.
Refining for durability
During our small‑scale pilot runs, however, we noticed that the silicone material was wearing down faster than expected – blasting media was gradually eroding the cover’s surface. That’s when we recommended a switch from silicone to a tougher rubber compound, which offers superior abrasion resistance. At the same time, we’re revisiting the internal clip design – we’re exploring a clip‑less version that relies purely on the rubber’s grip and elasticity, simplifying the product and reducing assembly steps. We’re currently modifying the sample mold and will deliver updated prototypes for our customer’s next round of validation.
