Why Silicone Sleeves Need an Oil Coating After Parting-Line Grinding

A real case study: hand trimming vs. tumbling

At our factory, we often get asked why a silicone sleeve looks clean after hand trimming but dull or “dirty” after tumbling. The short answer: for silicone, surface appearance depends on both the mold finish and the post-processing. Sometimes, grinding the parting line is not the final step—an oil coating is required. The project: a silicone sleeve for a metal grinder

A customer makes metal grinders. They needed a silicone sleeve to protect the metal. They came to us to build a production mold. They put real thought into the product’s appearance. They asked detailed questions about the parting line—where it would be and how thick it would be. They also stressed the quality of the steel. So we gave production clear instructions: when trimming flash, be careful and clean.

We sent two samples: one hand-trimmed, and one tumbled in a grinding machine. After tumbling, the surface looked very dull, a little dirty, almost like a second-hand product. The customer didn’t like it.

Why tumbled silicone can look blotchy

Many silicone sleeves for adult products are tumbled to a matte finish, then sprayed with soft-touch oil. This removes the dirty-shiny look and adds a smooth feel. So why does tumbling sometimes make the surface look so mottled?

In our tumbling machine, we usually add stones, cleaning liquid, and parts. The large turntable rotates, and the parts rub against the stones. The stones scrape the surface, leaving it shiny in some spots while leaving silicone sludge behind. That sludge cannot be washed off with water. The only way to fix it is to coat the surface with a matting oil.

What this means for your silicone parts

Surface appearance in silicone comes down to two things: the mold finish and the post-processing. A hand-trimmed part can look clean, but it may not have a uniform texture. A tumbled part can have a nice matte feel, but it often needs a coating to look consistent. The right choice depends on the part’s shape, the appearance standard, and the feel you want.
